The Club Championships give each swimmer the best opportunity to record a time in each event in race conditions. This not only indicates the swimmer’s progress but also enables them to compete against other swimmers with similar times. It provides the best opportunity for swimmers to achieve County Championship qualification times for the next year. The Championships are run in accordance with ASA Competition rules, using the ‘One Start Rule’.

We would encourage each swimmer to enter all of the events for their age group. Swimmers who go on to win their age-group generally do so by entering all their races. In terms of their confidence and development the earlier children start competitive swimming the better but please do talk to your coach if you have any concerns.

How do the Club Championships work?

Male and females usually swim in separate alternate events and each event is organized in accordance with swimmers entry time, which is usually their PB, starting with the slowest recorded time and finishing with the fastest, regardless of age. If no entry time has been set in an event then an estimated time will be used based on times achieved by similar swimmers.

The five fastest swimmers in each age group (age is at 31st December) will be awarded points in each event which will go towards their final total of points e.g. 1st 5 points, 2nd 4 points, 3rd 3 points, 4th 2 points, and 5th 1 point. Points will accumulate throughout the Championships. Results are published after each event. There are 8 age groups: 8yrs & under, 9 yrs, 10 yrs, 11 yrs, 12 yrs, 13/14 yrs and 15/16 yrs and 17 yrs and over.

 Finals:
There will be finals in the 50m and 100m events (not the 100IM) for the 5 fastest female and the 5 fastest male swimmers in the club. This does not affect the age group results but will determine who wins the ‘Club’ trophy for each event. The 8yrs and under swimmers have finals in their 25m races which does determine the order of the top 5 swimmers.

Heat Declared Win (HDW): Where there is no final, each event in each age group will be a Heat Declared Win (HDW). This means that the time each swimmer records in their race is sorted into order within their age group and places worked out accordingly. In other words you may not be in the same heat as other swimmers in your age group. Winning the heat does not necessarily mean winning the race. You may be in a heat with older and/or younger swimmers.

 The Skins Event:
This is usually held in December and is for the 5 males and 5 females who have the most ‘Skins’ points. During the Championships, Skins points are awarded to the top 10 male and female swimmers in each event (except for the 400IM, 800m and 1500m freestyle events) from 10 points down to 1 point. This will ascertain which swimmers will eventually compete. There will then be an exciting swim-off of 50m sprints of randomly picked strokes. The slowest swimmer in each round is then eliminated until a male and female winner emerges.

 What happens next?
Once we have recorded all the forms on the club’s computer, entry cards will be given to you. Please check them carefully and keep them safe. Warning! Cards must be handed in at the beginning of each session at the time stated. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that late-comers will be able to swim.

The Club Championships are extremely exciting to watch and to participate in, but perhaps most importantly it gives everybody the chance to get together and have an enjoyable time.

Parents please do come along and cheer on the swimmers.  The Championships are held at Stourport Leisure Centre, which, unfortunately, has limited space for spectators. A small entry fee will be requested and there is usually a Raffle.

Photography is not permissible at these Championships. Please ensure all mobile phones are switched off. Training videos may be taken by a nominated Club Representative only.
